Tomasz Wasilewski’s United States of Love is a powerful depiction of four women living unfulfilled lives in Poland in 1990, just as the country is transitioning from communism to democracy. The director, a frequent visitor to KVIFF, says his own father’s absence working in the West at that time informed the picture’s female perspective – and says its washed-out look reflects the memories he and his DP share of that era.
